Are there any restrictions on watering lawns?
Yes. In order to conserve water and maintain water pressure, from May 15 through September 15, please limit watering to between the hours of 4:00 PM and 10:00 AM on weekdays only. Those with automatic sprinkler systems should restrict watering to between midnight and 6:00 AM. If you have new landscaping that requires more frequent watering to establish the plants, written requests for extended watering hours can be accommodated.
In times of drought or when other unique conditions arise, the Village may issue additional water conservation measures.
What should I do if my water bill seems too high?
Two things: check to see if your meter reading is correct, and check for leaks in your home.
First, find your water meter. The inside meter is usually located in the basement or crawl space, or in the utility closet for homes without a basement. Read the meter from left to right. The reading in thousands of cubic feet should be close to the actual water bill reading, but don’t forget to factor in the water you’ve used since the meter reading date. If the reading on your bill is higher than what the meter says, call the Village at 847-945-6080 and describe the discrepancy. Someone will look into it for you.
An easy way to check for leaks is to read your meter either at night or before you leave from home for an extended period of time. Then read the meter again in the morning or when you return home—before using any water. If the reading has changed, you may have a leak. Common areas to check for leaks include toilets, sinks, water softeners, humidifiers, and sprinkler systems. If you are unable or unsure how to repair a leak, contact a licensed plumber. Remember, a leak means you’re paying for water you aren’t using!
Why am I paying for water if I’m not using it?
When people are out of town for extended periods, there are still costs associated with providing water and sewer service to your home: the capital expenditures for the distribution system and meter, the expense of reading your meter on a quarterly basis, billing costs, etc. Even if you are not home, you may be using water due to a leak or a plumbing problem that you might not be aware of until you return. That is why we continue to read your meter on a quarterly basis whether you are in or out of town, and send a bill. There will always be a minimum bill associated with having water and sewer service connected to your home.
How can I ensure my water bill is paid on time if I’m going to be out of town for an extended period of time?
You can authorize the Village of Bannockburn to charge your credit or debit card for water and sewer charges for as long as you are away.
